Population

The Salt Lake City Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 480,152 in 1970 to 1,087,873 in 2010. That was an increase of 126.6 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 18,871 in 1970 to 127,739 in 2010. That was an increase of 576.9 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 3.9 percent to 11.7 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 108.1 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) was the primary factor in population increase in all periods and NDM was negative in the the first two periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, B-D continued to be the primary factor in population increase.
